The Speaking Arabic series of books and recordings (4 books and accompanying audio 5 CD) is designed to help English speakers acquire a working knowledge of colloquial Palestinian Arabic.
The course is intended for students who, rather than contenting themselves with a superficial acquaintance with the language, strive to attain fluency and a high level of comprehension.
The fifty lessons that comprise the course combine an extensive review of the grammatical structure, morphology and syntax of colloquial Arabic – all explained in clear and accessible language – with a wide-ranging vocabulary of some 2,500 words.
Although the course is intended for independent study, it is equally suitable for classroom use.
Because of its central geographic location, the Palestinian dialect is understood throughout the Arabic-speaking Middle East (you can use it in Jordan, where there is a large Palestinian population, and it is understood in Egypt, too), and those who acquire it can easily make the transition to the dialects of Syria and Lebanon.
Book 4 concludes with a special lesson that demonstrates the close relationship between these dialects, together with examples of the slight differences that characterize each.
We believe that students who follow this course of study will find it to be both practical and user-friendly, and that it will prove to be their passport to the Arabic-speaking world.

  • Spin This! - second hand
Spin -- intentional manipulation of the truth -- is everywhere. It's in the White House, in the courtrooms, in headlines and advertising slogans. Even couples on dates -- not to mention book blurbs -- are guilty of spin. Here, colorful news analyst Bill Press freeze-frames the culture of spin to investigate what exactly spin is, who does it and why, and its impact on American society. Using examples drawn from recent history -- the Clinton presidency, the Florida recount, and the Bush White House -- Press first probes spin's favorite politics. He then surveys incarnations of spin in journalism, law, and advertising, and chews on the spin of sex and "dating," a word that has become the very embodiment of spin. Perhaps surprisingly, however, Press argues that spin isn't all bad, and that without it the harsh truths of our times might be unbearable.
With a keen sense of humor, Spin This! turns the tables on the prime purveyors of spin by highlighting some of their biggest blunders. Looking to the future, Press notes that the twenty-first century, beginning as it has with a president who was "spun into office," will be a fertile stomping ground for spin. Don't say you weren't warned.
